When your surgery is completed you will be taken to the recovery room where a nurse will apply monitors, check dressings, monitor vital signs and administer pain medication as needed.
Once the anesthetic is worn off sufficiently patients will go to the stepdown area where your family or friend will join you. You will be offered refreshments.
The amount and type of discomfort varies, based on you perception of pain and your procedure. Your pain management will be individualized to meet your needs.
If the Recovery Room is not required you may go directly from the operating room to the stepdown area, a process called Fast Tracking.
Your surgeon will visit with your family or friend following your surgery in a private consult room.
When you are ready to go home, the nurse will go over individualized discharge instructions. It is important that you and a family member/friend understand your care after surgery. Included in these instructions will be a phone number to contact your Doctor or the Doctor on call.
